The first time I watched him in
action I was impacted. He wasn´t twenty years old yet, I was just over ten. I
found floating on the lawn, It was amazing. His first appearance was during
March 1991. Surprisingly, he did not play the final of the Cup Winners' Cup in
Rotterdam on May against Barcelona.
For that final match, Johan Cruyff
called Vicent Aliaga, one of the best goalkeepers I've seen in my life, born in
Algemesi, circumstances prevented him from fully settle in first division. In
the top division, he was just a few seasons, most of the time on the Albacete
Football Team, whose main goalkeeper was Luis Gabelo Conejo, the historic Costa
Rican.
In that game, it would be the first
European title at United for Sir Alex Ferguson and his second Cup Winners Cup.
(He had already won one in 1983 with Aberdeen in the final after defeating Real
Madrid), was on the De Kuip’s Stadium pitch another player that time I was
really keen on, Lee Sharpe, whose career was too short taking in account his
immense talent and because of his stormy life outside stadiums.
Ryan Giggs trained with the
Manchester United first squad at age 15 for the first time. Alex Ferguson warned the other players to
be careful with him, he was skinny and delicate. On the first play that made
the new rookie, playing left wing, ditched his rival, the second will again and
in the third haggle left him a fool again. The opponent was Viv Anderson,
England National Team right back.
Steve Bruce, the captain at that
time, still remembers that morning. “We asked.. Who is this one? Viv was defeated
by him …I thought “Wow ¡¡¡ although I wanted to tackle him, I couldn´t.. He was
too quick” Bruce said that he had never seen anyone which so much natural
talent. “It’s the only guy I've seen who was 14 or 15 years old that I knew
with absolute certainty that would become a superstar." Bruce was right.
Nowadays, almost 22 years later of his debut, he is still a key point in Manchester
United.
